ASD and education in the early years:  


Strategies for teachers, early childhood educators and parents who are supporting children with ASD in early education settings and transitioning into school, focusing particularly on childcare through to year 3. 



Kari has worked in the education and training field for the past 2 decades, within a broad range of government and private organizations, as well as guest lecturing at QUT and Southbank Institute of Technology. Her skills and expertise have seen her present across Australia, and overseas, working with early childhood educators, families and organisations to facilitate positive outcomes for the youngest members of our community. Kari has in-depth knowledge of early childhood development and how to meet the needs of children who are experiencing challenges in early childhood education settings and will provide a wealth of proactive strategies that can be implemented within home, classroom and whole school environments to ensure that children experience success.



David Waterworth - Practical Strategies for Supporting the Student with ASD in the Classroom


After several years working with students with Intellectual Impairment David became a Support Teacher Learning Difficulties in 1989. Since then he has worked in a variety of roles across a range of schools. He has also been an auditor of schools under the National Safe Schools Program and an Advisory Visiting Teacher in Autistic Spectrum Disorder. David is involved in state wide teacher training programs for Independent Schools Queensland. He is the author of "Reading Friends" and a past President of Learning Support Teachers Association of Queensland. 




Darren Hassen - Medical Considerations

Managing Dentists, Hospitals, X Rays etc



Darren graduated from USQ in 1994 and commenced working at the Mater Children's hospital (MCH). Daren has worked in Children's health care for 20 years, including 9 years in London and he  is currently the Nurse unit Manager of the medical ward at MCH. Darren's eldest son Daniel was diagnosised with ASD when he was 3. Darren regularly presents to nurse education sessions about nursing Children with ASD and also presents at conferences, giving an insight into what it is like to be a parent of a child with ASD.
